Julie Mihalisin

Born 1962. Since her childhood Mihilisin has been fascinated by the beauty and translucent qualities of glass. As a student in London in the late l980’s she experimented with combining glass with precious metals. For Mihilisin the properties of the two materials are complimentary; metal is cold, precise, geometric, and mechanical; and glass is warm, human and organic. By slumping the glass (heating the glass just unto the point of melting), Mihilisin highlights the difference between metal and glass. In addition to Julie Mihilison’s sculptural jewelry she created complex multi-panel installations. Her work is in important private and public collections (the Smithsonianowns three of her neck pieces) throughout the country.
